Working While on Holiday in the UK

If you are between the ages of 17 and 30, then you can visit the United Kingdom on a holiday and work while you are in the UK. This lets you check the place out before deciding to emigrate permanently. It also lets you earn money while you are there; you don't need to have a large amount of money in the bank to do this.

To qualify to enter the United Kingdom as a working holidaymaker you must:

  • be a national of one of the Commonwealth countries listed in Appendix 3 of the immigration rules (click here to see the list, opens in a new window), OR a British overseas territories citizen, OR a British overseas citizen, OR a British national (overseas); and
  • be between 17 and 30 years old; and
  • intend to come to the United Kingdom mainly for an extended holiday, working for no more than a total of 12 months during your stay; and
  • not intend to establish any type of business or to provide services as a professional sportsperson during your stay; and
  • be unmarried or not in a civil partnership, or married to or in a civil partnership with a person who also qualifies as a working holidaymaker and who intends to take the working holiday with you; and
  • not have any dependent children who are aged five years or over, or who will turn five before you complete your working holiday; and
  • be able to support and accommodate yourself in the United Kingdom without recourse to public funds; and
  • not have spent time in the United Kingdom on a previous working holidaymaker visa; and
  • plan to leave the United Kingdom at the end of your working holiday.
